Know Your Audience

Entitled “Know Your Audience”, this talk will explain how to make the most of the modern music media, drawing from their wealth of experience in securing mainstream coverage and delivering major radio playlists for heavy acts. Topics covered will include; when to start thinking about press and publicity, building a campaign through specialist media to branch out into more mainstream coverage, how to approach the various media outlets, and a couple of case studies to show the process in action. This is a must-see for anyone hoping to secure magazine/media and radio coverage

Mod: Frank Godla (US)

With over 17 years of experience in the music industry, Frank Godla has paved the way of online media with his popular website Metal Injection. Wearing many hats including co-owner, host, and content director, he’s constantly innovating the way we connect with artists around the world from emerging talent to household names. He’s received many accolades with Metal Injection over the years including a win at the 2012 MTV O Music Awards in the “Beyond The Blog”  category for his docu-series, On The Record. In 2013, LA Weekly named Metal Injection one of the ten best websites for heavy metal, praising its original video content, appearances of modern artists and humor articles. It has also been listed by Ditto Music as one of the twenty influential music sites that support independent and new artists.


As a touring artist himself, Godla is also the creator and organizer of the Slay AT Home festival, which began in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Highlighting the best in underground arts as well as cover collaborations between renown artists.


Adam Sagir (The Noise Cartel, UK) 

Adam Sagir runs The Noise Cartel, a PR company specialising in the louder end of music. The Noise Cartel covers both print and online press, radio and TV promotion for a wide variety of artists, with clients including Architects, Arch Enemy, At The Gates, Bloodywood, Sabaton, BABYMETAL, Bullet For My Valentine, Ice Nine Kills, Lacuna Coil, Napalm Death, Ghost and Rammstein to name a few. Label clients include Svart Records, Century Media, Epitaph and Sumerian Records amongst others. He has worked in the music industry since 1999, at record labels, as a tour manager, artist manager and also performed in bands.


Celia Woitas (Metal Hammer, DE)

Combining two of her passions – writing and music – Celia Woitas started volunteering about eight years ago at the local radio station at the University of Leipzig while she studied German and Musicology. A few years later, Celia decided to find a medium that fits the written word a little bit better and found her way into the Intro magazine in cologne and later the Berlin-based office of the German METAL HAMMER magazine – a place for much of her music taste. She worked as an author for the print issue and in the online editorial team. At the time Celia is a freelance music journalist and writer and works for METAL HAMMER print and online and Bonedo on a regular basis. Because working one job feels like listening to one type of Genre for her she is also working as a lecturer for German and recently started getting to know the music business from another side as well by working as a music promoter with Head Of PR. Most of her free minutes go into playing her guitar(s) and her banjo.


Katy Irizarry (Season Of Mist, US)

Katy Irizarry is a North American publicity director at Season of Mist where she has worked for three years. She got her start at the age of 17 interning and writing for Metal Edge Magazine, eventually transitioning to radio at Sirius XM where she worked with Eddie Trunk for ten years. At the age of 22, she started radio promotion with Skateboard Marketing, which lead her to her first publicity job at Adrenaline PR where she worked with legendary bands such as Testament, Exodus, and Lamb of God, among others. From there, she moved on to become web editor of Revolver Magazine while also handling tour press with Freeman Promotions in which she worked with major labels such as Napalm Records, SPV, Spinefarm, Frontiers, and select Relapse Records, Season of Mist, and Metal Blade Records artists, most notably Gwar. Now, in addition to holding down North American promotions at SoM, she continues to write for Loudwire and Outburn while still dabbling in radio and podcast.
